On 5th July 2023, Crookes and Crosspool Councillor Ruth Milsom led Sheffield Labour’s celebrations of the 75th birthday of the NHS.
The video above was filmed with Sheffield Hallam residents who were born around the same time as the NHS.
Ruth arranged for Sheffield Town Hall to be lit in blue for three evenings around the anniversary, and exhorted a full Council Chamber to demonstrate its support for NHS workers with a round of applause.
As Labour Spokesperson for Adult Health and Social Care, Ruth spoke at Sheffield’s Full Council meeting which fell on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the NHS, exhorting the full Council Chamber to applaud all those who have ever worked in the service. She also used the occasion to highlight the struggles often faced by unpaid carers, who contribute a vast amount to keeping people well and out of acute care, calling on Councillor Tom Hunt – Leader of Sheffield City Council – to increase the council’s efforts to support the thousands of unpaid carers in the city.
"The NHS is the jewel in the crown of our society. Labour will always be proud of its creation, and will defend it to the hilt." Councillor Ruth Milsom
